Lava Javas :)

Lava Javas is a youth café located in the basement of Limerick Youth Service, Lower Glentworth Street. It is one of the many services offered by the Limerick Youth Service. It is a youth run, by the Youth Committee, but adult supervised, by the volunteers, service which offers young people aged 14-19 a place to hang out, play games and listen to music. Lava Javas is an alcohol and drug free environment which has a set of responsibilities in place so that everyone is treated fairly and no-one feels judged while they are here. As well as all this Lava Javas also runs clubs, groups and classes for youths to have the chance to interact with other young people with similar interests, such as art classes, and film club to name a few, and be given extra support in their education with study group.

On the 14th of October, film club started. Film club allows its members the chance to each pick a film each week which they would like to show the rest of the group. This week's movie was picked by one of the male members of the club, and was called “Easy Rider. It stars Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper; it was also written by the pair and directed by Hopper. The movie also guest stars Jack Nicholson. All the members were rounded up and told which movie would be shown this week. We were then brought out front to where we would be viewing the film. While the TV was being set up we were all encouraged to discuss what we knew about the film and the counterculture movement itself. After we had watched the movie, we were given time to discuss our thoughts surrounding the movie. The club was split down the middle, with half the group not understanding the film and the other half absolutely loving it. But the all club agreed that the movie was an appropriate biography of the life of young people in the counterculture movement in America during the late 60's and 70's.

Recently Lava Javas was featured on the Winning Streak to show where the National Lottery are donating the money they receive. Places like Lava Javas wouldn't exist if it wasn't for this money from these organisations.

If you want to see more about the youth café and all the other services the Limerick Youth Service offers check out their YouTube channel here or their twitter here.

Don't be afraid to pop in to Lava Javas in the near future :)
